Gman
If it is a fault with one or both new tyres / garage ... how do I stand ? Someone said something about a slipped belt ... ? I'm learning lots didn't realise so much was involved! The other thing like stated before they are noisy which suggests to me a problem with them.. Tony
Well you need to confirm there is a fault first.... As soon as moving tyres changes the drive then we have found the criminal.
Gman
Right swapped tyres back to front ... still exactly the same ! So looks like the tyres were all good . Â I've had to book the car in now at Ford as not sure what is causing it??? Wasn't really what I was expecting was hoping it might of been a simple tyre issue. The car is definitely getting worse it was better when the tyres were first fitted!?
Tony
I'm very interested in what they find.
Gman
I've been reading about electric steering and the need to re calibrate after a adjustment is made to the alignment... car go's in on Tuesday so wait and see .
Tony
Does your car have lane deviation detectors then?
Gman
I know you said my geometry was spot on, ignoring my issue at the moment would I not benefit from some toe out? thanks
Gman
No I don't believe it has lane devaition, it has EPS with torque angle sensor and steering angle sensor. Which apparently can solve issues with steering pull and drift. ?
Tony
Yes on the toe out..... Very unlikely your car needs the angle sensor set to the new thrust angle... Cars with several times you thrust are still within tolerance.
Gman
Ford reset the steering angles , angle sensor, straight ahead sensor and steering drift. Car drives much more like it should though not 100% happy still seems to pull to the left more so then I would expect from road camber but it's liveable.. Car doesn't turn in as well as I'd like so going to add some toe out soon .
Tony
So in essence they have re-set the EPS centre weighting... I don't suppose they gave you any form of printout?
Gman
No nothing... should they off?
Tony
Well it would be nice to know exactly has been done?........ When you turn is the steering weight/ feel the same both directions?
Gman
True , not sure haven't driven the car since last night but from memory I'm not sure it is... will have to check it tomorrow.
Tony
Reason i ask is if the assistance isn't balanced the EPS try's to move the steering toward the weaker side making the car drift/ pull/ lazy.
Gman
Ok I see thanks , it definitely drifts to the left for sure. I'm not overly happy with it but not sure where to go from here.. ?
Tony
Jack the front up, start the car and feel the steering lock/ weight loch-on-lock,
Gman
Thanks for the advice .. to adjust the eps I take it you need to have Etis Ford diagnostics program..
Tony
Depends what type you have?... Basic EPS, line deviation, shaker ( steering wheel or seat )
Gman
Not sure which I have to be honest. Is adjusting the eps (if basic version) something that you could do or a decent alignment/ garage ?
Tony
Probably a main dealer job?..... We had the equipment in one of our centres and out of many calibrations we used it just a few times? Reason for this the OEM tolerance is set very wide at the moment meaning very few customers needed re-setting and there's the cost for the equipment for something hardly used. Gman
Yes I can appreciate that. I may take it to another main dealer at a later date. Ideally I'd like to find a independent Ford garage they normally have more time and understanding.
Tony
I would agree with you there.... The personal touch rather than just a work sheet..... I think you have centre weighting type of EPS. This adds resistance back to the unassisted centre point. This can be adjusted via the ECU..
Gman
Yes I think your probably right regarding the EPS .
Gman
Haven driven the car tonight its unacceptable... seems to of started pulling left and right again .. more left though!!! I'm not happy going to be ringing the dealers ASAP .
