Mondeo brake judder, not brakes ?

Recommended Posts

Hi People im new to this site but am hopeing you can assist with my problem????

I have an 02 reg 2L mondeo estate, that has what can only be described as a half arsed attempt at abs activation, there fore not brake discs or pads (which i had renewed just incase) my brakes work fine but sometimes i feel they could have pulled me up a couple of meters shorter than they did, if i listen closely i can hear a quite fast ticking and possibly a gurgling sound from somewhere up front, i thinks its bulk head area and wife thinks its centre lower console area, and thats when the brake peddal shudders on use, if there is no ticking the pedal works fine??? i have little funds and can not afford the fords " hook it up on the computer for £100 an hour and could take 8 hours" approach, on a side note my air bag light is permantly illuminated altho im assured from the previous owner it has never been in an accident .... connected?

Appreciate any assistance offered folks :)

Have you checked the master cylinder? When was the fluid last changed and the system bled?

Is the airbag light on permanently or flashing in sequence? Flashing 4 times is usually the plug under the seat, it needs a clean and checked it's connected properly. If it's on permanently then I think it's the airbag at fault or more likely the clockspring, which it plugs into.

Welcome to WIM as well :)

when i first got the car i had it into what has since turned out to be a :thumbsdown_anim: bad garage, but i was told they had done a fluid change which i assume means a bleed aswell how can i check this has been done?, also the light flashes 4 times and then 3 time (both these flash 3 times before staying on) thanks for replying E55EX-RACER :)

Thanks for the welcome buddy :D

If the fluid has been changed then it's been bled. The ABS light flashing 4 times should be the plug under the seats. Wait at least 30 minutes before disconnecting them so the airbag system can discharge, unplug them and clean with electrical spray and plug back in, the light should stay off then. That's assuming 4 flashes gives the same code as the MK2 Mondeo.

Ok, back to the break judder .... what would the symptons be if the servo was not working, i do have a very basic mechanical knowlwdge of old escorts astra cavaliers etc but now everything has gone electrical and left me stuck in the eighties, lol im not even sure it has a servo lol and yes its a mk 2 i belive (02 reg)

02 reg is a MK3, mine was a MK2 (97-00).

How long ago did you replace the brakes and what brand did you use? Are you sure it's not a warped disc?

If there is a fault with the ABS system, the ABS and handbrake lights on the dash should stay on.

I had new pads and discs in july and this seemed to make the pedal judder happen very rarely however within a week it came back gradually to practicly everytime i applied tge breaks, 4 weeks ago i renewed a front caliper as it was not working on the back side of the disc and again fixed the judder for a week. I have no lights bar the air bag staying on and bar the judder the pedal preasure etc feels normal.

Its in for a new clutch today, i wasnt going to have the clutch done untill i was certain the pedal juddar wasnt going to be to serious, but i really like the car (its the ghia x with all the trimmings) ive decided whatever the fault it can be fixed...... its not quite ready for the scrapyard just yet. im thinking faulty servo because there is no rumble or wobble or vibration on normal drive low or high speed, just the very slight gurgling from the bulkhead which then results in brake pedal judder, like i say its a real slowed down version of abs activation and i think garages just want to say its this or that and gonna cost ££££s if I had to place a bet i would say knackerd servo but then when the pedals not juddering everything is a ok

The man at the cluth centre said i should completly drain and renew the brake fluid as suggested by someone on here, i was told it has already been done but i suppose if i do it myself i know its been done, now can i completly drain out through the calipers and gravilty feed the refill 1 at a time or should it be done professionly?
