Well big thanks to NickT who came to my rescue yesterday with his expert knowledge of the DeLorien engine. Within no time Nick fitted a fuel pressure gauge and determined the fuel regulator module was faulty and by chance he happened to have one with him

This thing bore the brunt of very old fuel

Sat in a barn for 18yrs.......

Still having running issues, like a hot engine when you throttle then pulling out the choke. Good news was NickT was still down south so he popped in again. Plan B was to service the fuel distributor...

This has a central needle acting as a regulator between the fuel/ air feed, anyway this was stripped down cleaned and refitted and so far it seems ok, if not NickT left me another one to fit. Next job today is to fit a new fuel accumulator, this generates reserve fuel back pressure and is known to fail over time.

You still thinking about dropping an LS1 into it? IMO that would be the way to go, give it some snort!

18 years... you know how to pick'em! :P

Did the owner 'winterize' the car before he parked it? If not.... being sat that long it's going to have severe varnishing issues in the fuel system, and it looks like maybe some corrosion too. You guys clean the injectors/ fuel tank? Might need a full service on the injectors and you could have varnish deposits in the tank. I'm not a professional obviously, My Dad and I used to see regular problems with fuelling issues from people not storing correctly. Though 18 years is a long time!

Glad I could help out even to get it to run right. I only had an hours time to look at it on the way down south and another hour on the way back up North ! Even if it gets the car out and about for now until a mega engine is put it.

It still needs a fuel accumulator for starters.

I flushed the line from the filter through the fuel distributor with the sticky plunger removed and cleaned the plunger and metering flap assembly with carb cleaner to get rid of the fuel varnish. The main cause was old fuel with small particles in it and varnish.

The injectors may need cleaning and I can do that with my test kit at home if need be but I advised Tony to change the accumulator first.

For now, he has to press his switch to run the fuel pump for 5 seconds to build up the fuel pressure in the k-jet and then start the engine but it did fire up on the button afterwards.

It's just old school k-jetronic and many cars in the early 80's had it (Escort XR3's, VW Golf GTI's, Audis, etc...). Unfortunately the fuel pressures are the main parts to sort out and this can only be done with a fuel pressure test. No EOBDii fault codes here !

The part I replaced was the Control Pressure Regulator and it's job is to control the pressure from cold to warm engine.

The fuel pressure test showed the CPR wasn't operational and the system had full pump pressure going to the injectors making it run way too rich.

With the engine stopped, the rest pressure died off straight away and monitoring he fuel pressure with the engine running showed short dips in fuel pressure with hard acceleration. Classic sign of the fuel accumulator being bad. This is pre-fuel filter so gets silted up anyway.

If I had more time I would remove the injectors, bench test them for pressure/ spray pattern and on the fuel distributor perform a volumetric flow/ pressure test.

(I don't make a good photo!)

I am..... Issue is i have set a budget for the car so it's either new engine or paint/ wrap for this side of the budget, meaning i can't continue with areas like roof lining/ carpet until i know how much i need to invest in the two big wallet munchers.

i always say build from the foundations up. you wouldnt appreciate a woman so much if she was all dolled up but hadnt had a wash for a week, you should always start at the logical begining, tidying things up can happen in a matter of course

Hi Tony, was great to see you, the Lambo and of course your lovely new centre over the w'end. Hope i havent made any of your decisions harder in terms of repainting or wrapping :) Very difficult choice with so many variables affecting your enjoyment from the car, and also its resale value as its certainly one of those cars that has the potential to be worth very good money if done right. I'll be going over the pictures i took with my colleague tomorrow and will be in touch.

Speak soon mate :)
