Definitely - not all private landlords are great and the system definitely needs more control in place for how they operate but now that all reliefs have been removed for private landlords but not for corporate landlords it's created the perfect environment for them to simply buy up everything (which they are doing rapidly).

You mean there is a different tax relief regime?

  2. Is there a war on private landlords? My experience of renting when I was younger was not a good one. The balance of power was always with the landlords. We should have rent controls here and I agree that everyone should have an affordable home. Having said that, stopping speculation is easier said than done - specially when we have politicians that are as bent as nine bob notes 🤣

Seems to be a lot of weird stuff going on in the market. Lots of people seem to be selling serious volumes of shares and liquidating assets.

Some of my shares have jumped in price significantly too over the past couple of months so will be keeping a close eye on things.

I was lucky enough to clear one of my mortgages this month.. Its only been going for 13 years and I have significantly overpaid to burn it down as fast as possible.. Also helped by a significant redundancy pay back in 2021.

One mortgage left now but that's the bigger of the two now at £110k which is up for renewal soon... I keep

seeing rates being pulled which is normal this close to a ~clown party~  election... But it does question what will happen!

The stock market seems to be hitting new highs - Dow at 40,000, FTSE at whatever it is - seems to be doing ok but I see that insiders, ie company owners and directors are making big sales cashing out some of their stakes. Hard to say what the next few months will bring, if I knew or was any good I would be a lot richer than I am ;)

I had to go to Screwfix after work so drove along to the garage to see if they had replaced any of the signage. Guess what, they haven't! WIM signs are still up.

As WIM was run under Blackboots and they purchased it from them I guess they aren't doing anything illegal like trading under false pretences. Although there is nothing to say it's actually Protyre there.

They should just take the signs down seeing as nobody connected to the old business is there any more.

Yeah, I don't think it's worth saving. I could get lucky and it passes again next year, depends how bad the rust will get. But I do less than 2000 miles, although most of it is in the winter.

Who did the welding on your Lexus? The MX5 might need some next year on the front.

the welding was done by the body shop behind the takeaways on uxbridge road - looks like a decent job

  6. Not sure which brand the ramp is Rich but it looks state of the art. No problems whatsoever with hanging about in the garage itself - they owners seem pretty chilled and the dog there is as gentle as anything. Lexus is handling really well now!

Good stuff. Do they have a Hawkeye geo ramp, I've not seen it yet?

Could you stay with Joe while I did it? I know they paid a premium on the insurance at WIM to allow that but I'm not sure at the new place.

Joe has now left Pro Tyre, he was the last member of staff from the WIM days. See the other thread about where he's now working.

When I was there the other week Pro Tyre have changed none of the WIM or BB signs, they haven't even put their own name on the building! Therefore, still trading off Tony's good reputation 18 months later 😞

Thanks for letting us know Rich. From what I hear that tyre centre has about one tenth of the footfall of when Tony/Jason etc ran it.

Have you paid the increased premium then Eddie or did you manage to get it cheaper looking around?

My Accord is due in November, I'm hoping it doesn't increase too much! I barely do 2k miles a year in it and tax costs £400 now plus it only does 20mpg. But I know it's reliable and changing it for something else could leave me with a pig of a car!

Ended up having to take a hit and pay more. Now dreading the renewal on my Lexus soon - I expect it to go up a fair bit compared to last year....

Do any car dealers actually want to sell a car these days...

Think they make their profit on finance and extras - not much margin in the cars themselves...

I had a letter yesterday from More Than (RSA) who I have the Accord insured with. They're no longer offering car insurance and I will receive a renewal quote from Swinton instead.

I've not read too much about it but it seems inflation is having a big impact on insurance too. Things like car repair costs have gone meaning they're paying out a lot more than what they did.

The MX5 insurance is due next week but that's on a classic policy and increased by £25, which I thought was good. So I will just renew that. I did get one quote elsewhere but it was £150 more! 🙃

Yeah I saw on the other half's RAV4 a big increase and when we tried to get the quote down they said "no" - only securely garaged hybrid toyotas get a lower rate. the thefts of cats, parts and now reversing cameras, headlight units and whole bumpers off toyotas is so high that they are shifting them into higher risk categories.

Apparently the Yaris is one of the most targeted cars by car part thieves due to shortages of certain items. Getting silly...

Wow, that's some bad corrosion. The MX5 ones need doing as well really but I might try doing that myself as they're not too bad.

How you finding the tyres, similar to the PZero?

the tyres feel about the same as the pzeros - i know the wheels are knackered - they need to be refurbed but the car itself needs a bit of work as well on the body
