Got some Detox Gel, Hydrate 80 and Dynax S50 to help sort some rust and protect the car smile.gif

I wanted to sort this bit that's creeping into the sill and a scrape on the arch. See how I get on with these as this is the first kind of body work I've done. If I'm happy with the results I will do all of the arch lips, both sides, the other sill is ok.

The Detox Gel is used to remove the rust. Hydrate 80 is a rust killer/protector and the Dynax is like waxoyl for doing under the arches and if I've got enough I'll do the underneath of the boot as well.

The gel is covered with clingfilm for at least 12 hours so it can work it's magic. Hopefully I've applied it correctly, will find out tomorrow! smile.gif

I need to do this kind of thing with the Silvia too. There are loads of odd spots of surface rust here and there that need doing before it rots.

Are you sure you needed the gel ? I thought the rust neutraliser/convertor would have been enough ?

Yeah that's why I'm doing this now, don't fancy paying out to have new sills welded in. Hopefully it will add a few more years to it anyway.

The gel removes the rust and the hydrate 80 acts as a rust remover/barrier system. So with this you would scrape away any loose rust, apply this and then primer/paint etc. With the gel you keep applying/removing it until there is nothing but clean bare metal showing. As it's the sill I would rather go this route and make sure it's all gone smile.gif

Will take some more photos once the cling film comes off tomorrow after work. I will probably have to put another coat on and then I can spend the weekend painting it.

Never heard of that stuff, i always used to use Jenolite gel rust remedy on my rusty minis? good stuff too biggrin.gif

Might be worth a coat of waxoil inside the sills too if you can get into them matey? smile.gif

Got a big job like that to do on my skyline soon, going to redo the underseal and paint all the metalwork under the car? wacko.gif

The company is popular on detailing world which is where I read about them.

Can't get into the sills but the Dynax S50 would be the thing to use smile.gif

I'm tempted to do the underneath but that will wait till next year now.

I wanna try the soft clay they do and Surfex, but gotta save the pennies!

Went out for a peak an hour ago and you can see the metal turning silver already smile.gif

Busy day today...

I've put the 3rd application of Detox Gel on this afternoon, same thickness as the first 2. The sheet that came with it said 4mm thickness so I have been aiming for this. I've since found out I should be applying it so thick you can't see the rust through it on this type of corrosion...so I will be redoing it again tomorrow but it's getting there smile.gif

The metal where the scrape is has now turned silver smile.gif I've applied some Hydrate 80 to this and will give it 24 hours to dry before painting over it. I applied 2 coats, within 30 minute intervals.

I've also used it on some interior bits, which I've not painted over as I don't think it needed it. The rust inside was from leaks I've had and the car is 9 years old so it's done well anyway.

Now for the photos smile.gif

With the 3rd coat, which I now know should be alot thicker!

That looks impressive stuff. I'd be inclined to put something over the inner stuff unless what you are using leaves a protective coat. You have a fair bit of rust there for a nine year old car ( even a Mondeo ).

The Hydrate 80 also acts as a rust barrier, obviously painting over it would make it last longer.

I'm not sure why I have that much rust in the sill, the other side doesn't have any! huh.gif

Shut it you! laugh.gif Mondeo's aren't that bad for rusting actually, unlike the escort! whistle.gif

Another update smile.gif

I applied the gel ALOT thicker this time and WOW what a difference that made! biggrin.gif

Most of the rust has gone now, I noticed a few loose bits that I couldn't remove with a scouring pad so used the grinding stones I bought. I only have a cordless cheap drill so it didn't remove much but made a difference.

I'm going on holiday Saturday morning so I need to apply the Hydrate 80 tomorrow after work. At least it will be protected until I can paint it when I get back.

At least I know that to get quicker results apply it alot thicker. Found some more rust spots along the arches so will be sorting those as well rolleyes.gif

Photo time!

Cheers mate smile.gif

It's not too much work TBH, 10 minutes every other day to clean the gel off, wash, reapply and cover with cling film.

I was going to spray it today but will leave it till Thursday as got all the unpacking to do from our holiday! closedeyes.gif
E55EX_RACER
Took a couple of photos before I went away, this is before I applied the Hydrate 80. I may take it off and apply some more gel though as I'm not sure all of the corrosion has gone, the black bits left could be paint but then again they could be rust! I'm getting the primer/paint/clearcoat tomorrow and will start the spraying before it gets too cold smile.gif

aztecbandit1
Its/you've done a great job mate cool.gif

You'll probably find after a good sand down most of the black bits will go, leaving you a nice clean surface to work with? smile.gif

I painted over the metal with the Hydrate 80 before I went away so it wasn't just bare metal. I'm hoping the black bits were just paint that hadn't been removed, it was smooth to the touch so hopefully weren't rust.

Got the paint today and used the primer, leaving it until Saturday morning and then will paint over that and the clearcoat can go on Sunday. I'm not too sure what to do with the scrape as that was down to the metal and I just keyed the paint around it. I may apply the paint abit thicker in that area and then rub it down so it's all even unsure.gif

I'm happy with the progress I've made so far smile.gif

Looking good mate, you could use the high build primer if you want to give it a bit more thickness?

Just make sure you feather the edges of the primer before the top coat goes on mate, so that it doesnt leave the masking marks cool.gif

Great improvement though on how it was thumbsup_anim.gif

Another update, I decided to do the arch on the other side seeing that we had nice weather over the weekend smile.gif

First up here's the sill all painted. I've had to redo the scrape as I went through the paint when I sanded it down ready for the clearcoat. I don't think I put enough coats on TBH but as I've said this is the first kind of spraying I've done so it's a learning curve. I found out about the feathering afterwards, I should've peeled the tape back as I sprayed but never mind.

I probably should have used some filler where the rust had pitted the metal but as most of it is covered by the door I should get away with it.

Painted sill

Next job was the rear arches. I used kurust 2 years ago on some rusty areas and painted with hammerite smooth. This is what they looked like the weekend and as you can see it did a good job!!

Before

Rubbed down with a wire brush

E55EX_RACER
Hydrate 80 applied

Dynax applied

E55EX_RACER
Dynax after 24 hours

Sprayed the Dynax behind the arch lip as well as in the corner

Also used the tube to spray inside the cavity and for those of you wondering the holes are in the side of the tube. So it sprays at 360 degrees, not straight out of the end.

E55EX_RACER
Next job was the underneath, mainly around the spare wheel. Only thing I moaned about was there is no tubing that sprays out of the end to get the Dynax right in the corner. Holding the can horizontally means it doesn't come out but I managed to angle it to spray in the corners.

Before

Hydrate 80 after a rub down

Dynax with the flash!

Without the flash

E55EX_RACER
Last job for the weekend was the rust on the other sill. Decided to just strip all of it back. Once I did this used the grinding stones to remove any good paint and loose rust. Spot the hole...eek!! sad.gif

Before

When it came to applying the gel I found it easier to do a section at a time. There is no way you can get it thick enough on this area without it dripping off. Made a line in the cling film and then taped it in place so it was pressing against the rust. God knows what people thought when I was driving to work! laugh.gif

With the gel

I am leaving this on for 48 hours and then will just reapply it to the areas that need it.
E55EX_RACER
Another update

I left the gel on for 4 days this time as I didn't get the chance after work to do anything. It seems to have got rid of all of it, there may be abit of corrosion left at the bottom near the sill so I've put some more gel on. Will fill that hole in Saturday and paint it all with Hydrate 80. After this I've got a pea size spot of rust I want to sort and that will be it before winter biggrin.gif

From what i saw of the car today you are making some remarkable inroads with the rust and a top blog to boot thumbsup_anim.gif

Cheers mate, it's been a busy month and I've had all the interior out as well - See here biggrin.gif

Filled that hole in today and painted the arch with Hydrate 80, not much more to do now. I suppose the real test will be to see what it's like after winter/in a years time smile.gif

Will get the photos of the hole up tomorrow, too knackered now as I was up at 6am to watch the F1!! laugh.gif

I checked it last week when I washed the car and arch/sills are looking great. No signs of any rust coming through, I'm just abit disappointed with my crap spraying technique! laugh.gif The real test will be after winter and I've not had the chance to check the underneath yet, plus it's too cold.

Next year I have abit more rust (5p size) to remove on the sill side and then I will get that whole area sprayed properly so it blends in.

nice 1 mate....you love that car to much man....maybe you wore the paint away polishin it every day hence its started to rust lol.....i hope you rubbed down them arches before you topcoated them wink.gif
E55EX_RACER
Well it's been 8 months since I first treated the sill and here are the results. As you can see there are no signs of the rust reappearing, bubbling or change in colour. Compared to what I've used before, namely kurust, which did absolutely nothing for the rust I have in the arches I am VERY impressed with how this has worked. So for anyone who does have doubts about these products hopefully this will help change your mind smile.gif
