Cannot change ride height with GAZ Pro

Hi

I have just fitted some GAZ Gold Professional coilovers to my MK1 MX5 but I am having some difficulties setting the ride height. The springs are 400lb front 300lb rear. I also went for the MK2 type as the previous owner had MK2 Bilsteins on this car and the mounts were already with it.

I am having difficulty setting the front ride height on either side as I am unable to raise it beyond 310mm from hub centre to wheel arch lip regardless of the perch height. I have tried perch heights between minimal pre-load and with the perch raised to less than 3mm below the top of the damper body's thread without any change in height. At full droop with the body raised the height between hub centre and wheel arch is approximately 375mm suggesting the rod length is ok.

The rear ride height is adjusting correctly showing 345mm with the base of the lock nut to the base of the silver body set at 150mm.

Was wondering if anyone had encounted this problem before and if so how it was resolved -310mm front looks good but I don't fancy shaving speedbumps!

Hi Nick

I changed the units using the 'long bolt method' which was originally torqued up with the car suspended on axle stands. I did try and loosen and retighten the long bolt (one side only) with the hub jacked up enough to raise the car slightly to no avail.

I wondered that myself after reading a post on here, I've been speaking with GAZ about this by email, their last message stated:

"No because if the springs were to short then they would dislocate on full droop & then this would mean they are to short but if you still have some preload on them when the damper is fully open then they are correct, the spring fee length should be 8â€."

I'll measure the length under load as you said.

I 've replied asking for any further suggestions but I'm yet to hear back..

Spring lengths OSF accuracy as best possible with a tape measure on reasonably level ground. Unable to reach to measure spring with wheel attached so simulated by raising/lowering hub:

Minimal pre-load, full droop: 200mm

Minimal pre-load, horizontal wishbones: 175mm

Minimal pre-load, fully loaded: 150mm

1 thread visible above top perch, full droop: 185mm

1 thread visible above top perch, horizontal wishbones: 155mm

1 thread visible above top perch, fully loaded: 142mm
