Tony
So it begins.... I used to really enjoy cleaning my Lotus and i want to get there again with the 360 so today it was a trip to Halfords for an all-round cleaning kit/ polish... Results to follow but first a question? After looking and looking i couldn't fined anything to clean and protect to fabric roof? Can anyone suggest something?
liner33
Autoglym do a kit for fabric roofs but i usually just scrub them with a nail brush and car shampoo
Tony
If i use shampoo will it leave white residue and will it make it water tight?
SMARTLY
As liner says: Â http://www.halfords.com/motoring/car-cleaning/interior-cleaning-vacuums/autoglym-cabriolet-fabric-hood-maintenance-kit
Tony
You know i paced up and down the store and didn't see that .... Now i know what to look for I'll get some tomorrow... Expensive stuff though, still i bet it will last for years.
SMARTLY
Think you do it once a year
andyelcomb
Recently treated my MX5 canvas roof with Fabsil Gold and it's brilliant stuff. Water just runs straight off so certainly makes it waterproof.
Rich
Yeah you need to treat it once a year ideally. I've not done it since getting the 5 but I have a bottle of renovo to use and it should do 2 treatments. Water just sits on the roof so it needs doing asap. Â Don't use shampoo on the roof. Just brush it, hoover, wash with a mild solution of all purpose cleaner using the brush to work it in and rinse off with a gentle stream of water from the hose. Tony
I bought some cleaner today as per link.... Does anyone know if the inside needs doing as well?
SMARTLY
No, not unless it's dirty. If the outside is sealed then you stay dry inside
Tony
Excellent because the inside look like a right pain to do.... I was going to try the stuff today but the weather looks like rain so maybe the weekend then.
Tony
Bought some Autoglym soft top refurbishment for £23 but i was scared off due to the warnings "DO NOT" get on paint or glass!! Annoyingly i lost the receipt so no taking that back but i opted on this instead   Not tried it yet due to the weather but it reads much better without all the warnings. Rich
That one gets terrible reviews! Better off using the AG one, just mask the glass, that's what I'll do.
Tony
What are they saying about it?.... Turtle Wax is a well established brand so i would be really surprised if it's pants.
Rich
7 reviews and they're all 1 star - https://www.turtlewax.com/en-gb/our-products/essentials/turtle-wax-soft-top-cleaner-conditioner-kit  They might have been around for years but it doesn't mean they make good products! NickT
What are they saying about it?.... Turtle Wax is a well established brand so i would be really surprised if it's pants. "Kwik-Fit" "is a well established" brand
Tony
The reviews seem consistent saying it's crap....Looks like it's AG then.
Rich
I always read reviews first, saves wasting money! Although it doesn't always work that way!
Tony
I confess i just went for the product name.... Oh well you live and learn.
JamesV70R
Don't worry too much about getting fabric cleaner on glass! I can't see something designed for cleaning fabric doing any damage to something that stops 70+mph of wind and numerous stones from hitting you in the face ... Â If you get any on the glass, just wipe it off. Â It'll be like wax manufacturers saying "don't put this on your windows" - I have waxed my rear windows before! Tony
Why are they so stern about not getting it on the paint?..... I thought about doing the roof and then washing the car, would that be enough?
Rich
It's the proofer rather than the cleaner, they dye the fabric as well as treat it. Just use some old sheets to trap between the roof and glass then mask the rear window. Â You need to let it dry after applying to a damp roof so don't wash the car straight after applying. If any does get on the glass or paint just wipe it off immediately, don't let it dry.
Tony
Right it's the AG for sure.... Cheers for the advice team wim
Tony
Done the first stage with AG and as it foams there's no way you can avoid the paint so i applied the wash coat the washed the car. Tomorrow I'll apply the protective coat and post some images.
Rich
If that's the cleaner it'll be fine, it's only all purpose cleaner. It's the proofer you have to be careful with. Â It would've been easier to apply that today as the roof needs to be damp. You could've cleaned the roof, then the car, then sprayed the proofer on the roof while it's still damp wiping off any that gets on the paint or glass. Â Now you'll have to damp the roof tomorrow which will probably cause water streaks down the paint so you're just making more work for yourself.
