Name the car that broke your heart to get rid of and why?.....

I would say my Lotus Esprit. It took me years to find a good one that hadn't been modified in any way. When my wife died i sold it to pay off debts plus the great feeling i had driving the car died with my wife. Given the chance i would buy it back until i found out it had been repainted from red to white.

Just like this one, same colour etc. but different wheelas. Someone reversed into the passenger door outside the pub one night and I found out who it was. I went to see him and chase him for the damage a week later only to find out he'd died that week.

Nice car in it's day... Very American look what with the long nose and the 2.8i with blown arches was a real rocket.

Mine was tuned (Of course) bored out to 3.1 , flowed heads , stage 2 cam and modified carb etc , made about 185hp compared to the stock 138hp and the 2.8i 's 160hp 

 

Had a 2.8i as well , later one but it lacked the character of the mk1

No everyone modified them especially Fords , I found a guy to rebuild the engine who used to work for Broadspeed (Very famous in the 70's and 80's) and then one of the open wheel Formulas that used the 3.0l Essex engine , his son had been rescued by RAF Air Sea rescue so he worked very cheap for me and used his contacts to find me cheap parts , did a a great job building the engine

I had a modded Ford in the early 70's, an Anglia 105E with a 1500 engine bored out to 1650, twin webbers, Peco exhaust, remote gear shift, cortina gearbox and it was in Volkswagen orange, with wide rostyle wheels, spacers and black bumpers. Interior was all black with bucket seat covers, fibreglass overdash housing all the usual extra instruments plus a radiomobile radio and record player ( 45's ). Sadly no pictures.

When I got my first company car (in 1965?) it wasn't nearly as "desirable" as my own private vehicle; a Hillman Super Minx. There was no way that I could justify keeping two vehicles at that time, so the Minx had to go. I really resented the change at the time, but looking back I realise that it was all pretty immature of me.

Average car in it's day.... Didn't they have issues with head gaskets... Saying that i think most GB cars had issues with them.  

I never had any problems with mine. The early ones had a cast iron cylinder head, which later was changed to aluminium. Maybe that had something to do with it, 

At the time, it just seemed to me to be a quiet, comfortable, family car with an excellent gearbox and good steering. It was a long time ago and you have to remember that before it I had been driving big Fords from the immediate post war period with worm and peg steering, bench seats and a dreadful three speed gearbox with the change on the steering column. The Hillman was definitely up-market in comparison.

I see what you mean Sagitar, given the time frame the Hillman was a transition since post war times took cunning survival. I think many including myself envisioned 1945 war over and everything was fine.. Now I'm that bit older i can't imagine what it was like rebuilding the broken war torn county.
