Broken Spring - What Caused This?

This is from the in-laws Fiesta, he was driving the other day (luckily very slowly) when he heard a loud bang. He was a minute from home so got it there and had a look, the spring had snapped.

The surface area looks rusty but he also said he hit a pothole the other week so maybe that fractured it?

New springs are arriving tomorrow.

They look easy to change - remove the bottom shock bolt, then either lever the beam down or use compressors to remove the spring and refit new one. Is it really that easy?

It's a 2010 Fiesta so only 7 years old with 100k miles on it.

My Mondeo had 150k miles on the shocks and springs before I lowered it and they were fine. My Accord has 120k miles and is still on the original suspension, although the front shocks have gone but that is a very heavy car compared to a fiesta.

Maybe the springs need to be beefier?

I suppose they are subjected to a harsh life so anything over 60k miles is good going. For what they cost it's not too expensive to replace them, especially if you can do it yourself. I ordered him some Sachs ones for £70 delivered.

That's why I assumed it was the rear as they're more common for snapping.

Yeah it's a spring compressed, top mount off job - main concern is the pinch bolt, is it threaded in the knuckle? Might be an idea to remove it all complete than deal with a snapped bolt.
