Viking
Aside from which, avoiding the hassle of trying to keep a car I'd paid for or getting my money back is much easier than having to do it. I'd rather buy a car knowing it's going to be mine when I'd paid for it than jump through legal hoops in the future to prove it's mine. liner33
You are in the clear legally if you buy a car from a dealer and later it transpires it has finance, its only private sales that it would be an issue Provided the dealer is still in business... The finance company cant chase you for the debt , you would legally be classed as an "innocent buyer" and your receipt would give you clear title Its the dealers debt not yours , if the dealer went out of business then they would chase previous owner , they cant chase you for it
Rich
Does that apply to a dealer and used car trader? When we got the Lexus they printed out the HPI check and showed us it before paying for the car. I didn't feel the need to do my own but I guess it can't hurt to make sure everything is in order before completing the deal.
Viking
Phoned the dealers just now and spoke to a different person. She very helpfully got the details we needed, read them out over the phone, and they fit nicely into the spaces waiting on the HPI report. All green now. Liner, I get what you're saying, but for £6 and hassling the dealer (who let's be fair hasn't been going out of his way to make me feel as though he can be trusted) it's something that I've done on every vehicle I've bought (or considered) for the past 15 years. In that time I've come across a VIN from an Escort van which belonged to a Transit van, a VW Beetle with 30k miles removed from the clock, a CAT D Berlingo van, and a Seat Altea which was a CAT C. All from dealers... Suffice to say I don't trust anything I'm told from someone who has an interest in removing money from my wallet in exchange for 4 wheels and an engine. Viking
Also, when speaking to the girl on the phone she told us we were collecting the car on Saturday morning at 9.45. Which is interesting because we hadn't actually paid for it so they were very trusting in expecting payment to arrive before then. And when she gave us the reference to use when sending payment over they'd got our surname wrong. When asked if we were to use an incorrect name on the reference, or change it to our correct name so it didn't match their records she changed their records to reflect our correct name. All in all, it seems like we've had a fairly incompetent sales person dealing with us. or maybe he just wasn't too bothered about doing his job efficiently. His job, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week is to sell cars. If he can't get a customers name correct then I'm doubtful of his ability to correctly make out the V5 details when he sends it off. That would end up as another member on here (Rich?) with an issue of returning the V5 for rectification. All incompetence and aggravation which you shouldn't really have to put up with from someone who's being paid to not make mistakes.
Rich
Yep that was me with the V5 issue, I think someone else sent that off and not the sales guy who sold me the car. They delivered the car to us (3 hour drive) without even taking the payment first, they did it when they arrived with the car, which suited me anyway. I'm still waiting for the handbook though 3 months later!
Tony
3 months!!...Talk about fire and forget
Rich
Apparently they sent it and it got lost in the post, I've been chasing them to send another one since. If I buy one used it's £35 on ebay and I don't see why I should have to pay for it!

Viking
Spoke to our insurance broker this morning about changing insurance over when we go collect. They're closed from 12.30 today until next Thursday. So we don't have time to get to collect the new car and swap the insurance over before they're closed. The answer was we've changed the insurance from old car to new as of 12.00 today, and then he's added our old car back onto the policy for 7 days at a cost of £16. So essentially we have 2 cars insured from now for 7 days. Just need word from the dealers that everything is in order and we can go collect.
