extra load tyres on one axle only

Hi

I had two new tyres fitted but instead of being 245/40 r18 93 they are 245/35 r18 97 extra load. The tyres on the rear axle are OEM size 275/35 r18 95.

Is it ok to have xl tyres only on one axle?

Also what would be the recommended pressure in the XL tyres?

Mercedes recommends 2,1 in both front and rear when normal driving or 2.4 front   2.6 rear when loaded or fast driving.

Any suggestions?

The car is Mercedes CLS

Thank you

Tom

Hello Tom

So both the front tyres are 245/35 r18 97 extra load?... Is there any reason you didn't have 245/40 r18 93 fitted?

The front being XL isn't a problem other then you paid more without needing to. The OEM tyre pressure is just a guide, it's up to you if you add or take away 1 or 2psi. The extra psi loaded or fast driving is a method to reduce the tyres contact patch? Reads odd but normal air pressure isn't a constant due to the moisture expanding or contracting. Most places including ourselves use nitrogen inflation because it's an inert gas unaffected by heat or cold.

yes both front tyres are 97 xl instead of 93. I ordered 93 and paid for 93 ......but they fitted 97..

I only realised when I got back home. The tyres where fitted when I had my wheels refurbished and it is a 45 miles drive to get back and I really can't be bothered to go back and get it sorted. If it will not create any stability or esp problems (if it is basically safe) than I leave it as it is.

O sorry I just spotted mistake in my post.

The oem tyres where 245/40 R18 93 but what I got fitted is 245/40 ZR18 97 XL.

So the size is correct just the load index /stiffness isn't.

Yes it's fine, in fact it's better since you paid less than the higher XL tyre. Point to note is the XL is there for heavier cars meaning the tyre has extra sidewall plies or stronger plies, other than that they are the same compound and so on.

ok

Thank you.

I am having geometry checked at your place next weekend . How much do you charge for nitrogen inflation and does it need checking/toping up the sam as air?

Is your car a MB?.... We wouldn't charge since your having other work done.. What we do is vacuum the air out then inflate with nitrogen. The molecule is larger than air so less able to migrate through the sidewall membrane. When you top up with air you basically distil the benefit.
