Forum Issues

Recommended Posts

I see that the https issues still aren't resolved here yet, any ETA for fix?

This will stop many users from logging in if follow Google links etc.

I'm trying to suss it out but not having much luck. The website guys have abandoned us so I'm going to need some help I think.

I've not used IP's forum software, but most are pretty similar.  To me, your issue looks like you are trying to call http files, such as script files, from https pages, which most browsers will give at best a warning, or simply silently ignore.  You really, where possible, want to be using relative links to pull these files, rather than ones with the FQDN in.

On www.omegaowners.com, due to our setup, we pull all our static files, including script files, from another server (on another continent :D), so our links have to be full links.  In that case, we found by making them https, that worked, and also didn't upset browsers that went http to the site.

If you need a hand, I'm willing to assist, although don't have experience of IP BBS as said.

Thanks. I don't actually think it's a problem with the forum software, the website is also affected. It seems to be a http/https issue so I need to look into that first.

  • 2 months later...

Just tried making a post in Tony's one about contents insurance, say there for 5 minutes saying "Saving post" ...........

but this one worked OK ????

So this is what I was trying to add .....

Yes, sometimes it's an option but you can still cover it. Just watch out what excess you allow on the policy as if the excess is high then you might not be able to claim of the fridge / freezer. Happened to me smile.png

( £300 excess and £350 of food in the freezer ).

***** get rid of the spaces between the smiley and the open bracket and it can't compute :(

I think you are still suffering issues around http/https redirection, and how browsers then respond to insecure content.  That needs to be solved really, as on the Windows desktop IE/Edge remain (rightly) the most popular browsers, and for the most part, you are excluding those users.

Slow/intermittent responses can be around server load, both on webserver and database server.  Its been a while since I've used cPanel, but I think you can get the load index there, assuming your hosting provider (Zen Internet) haven't disabled it.

Do you know if your database (probably MySQL or MariaDB) is on the same physical server as your webserver?

If you need a hand, as said before, feel free to reach out (with Tony's permission of course)

I think both Rich and myself would welcome guidance.... Rich did mention a lot of our issues are with Zen, at one point they closed the forum due to a corrupt file and they gave us one hour to resolve the issue,

  • 4 weeks later...

I've found Zen to be pretty switched on, and certainly my own dealings (as a broadband customer) have been absolutely spot on.  Though for hosting, there are different options about how involved they get.

Probably one for Rich - are all your images hosted on the same server under the same base URL (www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk)?  I'm thinking of a lift-and-shift, if you think Zen are the issue.  However, your certificate issues are around the links within the site.

If you go shared hosting (unless the software is really poor, I don't think WIM now sees sufficient traffic to go dedicated, unless Tony is feeling particularly flush :D), you might lose some of your members using old stuff, such as XP, or really old versions of Android (pre ICS IIRC) or really old Apple devices (iOS3 from memory).

Also, how big is the entire forum, both in Mb and number of files, both for filesystem (the forum framework and all images, plugins etc) and databse (Zen use cPanel IIRC, and therefore I think you'll find that either under Databases or PHPMyAdmin) - PM this if its commercially sensitive. If you want me to sign an NDA, happy to ;)

Alot of the problem Nick is that we had no contact or control with Zen cos an external company set it all up on Tony's behalf and they would only deal with them.

I have already put the 'wheels in motion' to migrate to another host which should happen next week and we'll have full control. I was going to switch to cloud hosting but have decided to stick with cpanel for now. Get everything moved, the forum updated, as it's long overdue and then sort any remaining issues.

Everything is hosted in the same place including images. The website and forum are around 5gb I think, the database is tiny! Can't remember the size but under 250mb. If I need any advice I'll let you know :)

You don't really want to be clogging the space up with gif images, especially large ones. Better off hotlinking them.

Hopefully the YouTube embedding issue will be sorted with the forum update although I'm not sure if that's causing the issue or it's the https problem.

**NOTICE**

The site and forum have been migrated but I've not been able to test it yet. Anything that has been posted from this morning will not be transferred across so it'll be lost.

Once I'm happy the migration has gone well I'll turn the forum off until the nameservers have been changed.

For future reference, when moving hosts, knock the TTL on the DNS right down for the period of migration, and at least the TTL time before planned migration.

Sorry, if I'd known it was imminent, I would have said unsure.png

Also checked domain registration, and the nameservers are still currently Zen Internet's ones.  Have you adjusted, via cPanel, the new IPs for www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk?  If not, it ain't gonna work.

I wouldn't attempt to migrate the domain registration at this point until the DNS is all pointing at the right places, or you'll be in a whole heap of smelly stuff.

If you need temporary authoritative DNS servers, just shout, but I'd need about 24hrs notice.

I haven't given the nameservers to the host yet to change so it's still working off Zen. I've been out all day but will be checking the migration has gone ok using a host file. If it has then I'll get the nameservers changed. That's why I said anything posted after this morning won't copy over.

Ah right, hmm...  How long did migration take? Might be worth doing it several times and testing (via hosts file) until you've nailed it, then do a fast migration and not lose posts...

...esp as the DNS prereqs weren't sorted before hand.

Right back online! :)

Sorry it took a while, we were waiting for the external company to change the nameservers on the domain, I've also had a couple of issues to sort out.

Some pages may show as not fully secure, this is down to the images not loading from https so nothing to worry about and I should get it sorted soon.

I have also sorted the redirect issues out, hopefully!

Any issues let me know but I will be keeping things how they are for a week or 2 and then I'm going to upgrade to the newest version of IPB.

Well done and thanks Rich.... Finally we are in a stand alone position and not hindered with the like of Zen and other internal management my end.

As said if anyone notices issues over the next few weeks please say so we can fine-tune the forum so everyone's happy.
