Time for a new motor.

We've had the Seat Altea for 4 years now, and it's just tipped over 140k trouble free miles, so it's got to the time when it needs to go. This is what it looked like not long after we bought it, and to be fair it looks pretty much the same now, just a little more tired.

So, on Monday we're off to Nottingham to pick up this.

As it happens both our old car and the new one have the same engine. It's 140 BHP, and mileage in the Altea was about 45mpg average. In the Jetta it'll be closer to 50mpg, due to it being a lighter car.

Edit: Oh, it's a 58 plate with just about 75k miles on the clock.

Quick update.

Car went back to VW last week for a warranty claim on the bonnet. Paint was bubbling on the front edge, and it's a fairly well known issue. Fully covered by VW so no issues there. Had a call from the dealers to say the bonnet is not worth repairing so it's getting a new one fitted and sprayed.

Also, a quick check over revealed that there's a broken rear spring. And I reported an issue with the doors locking and unlocking occasionally when braking and accelerating, so a new ignition barrel required. And a day before it went into the dealers the service light came on, so they've given it a service at the same time.

While they've ben doing this I've had a loan car. A brand new VW Golf SE Bluemotion technology, with a list of toys.

So, going to pick mine up tomorrow with a final bill for the spring, ingition barrel, & service of £242.

I like my main dealers. :D

Seem to be getting lots of snapped springs from all sorts of motors these days.

I think its to do with having longer and fewer windings - and probably poor spring steel too.

I've replaced them recently (last couple of years) on two Mk1 MX-5s, my S reg Subaru Legacy, an R reg Golf GTi and heard of a number more.

Maybe its because they are older cars that "back in the day" wouldn't have travelled nearly so far, for so long, over so many potholes...

The car's done just over 100k miles and it was just the bottom end of the spring brolen off. I had a broken spring on the Seat Altea we had before this at 140k miles, so it might be common.

The ignition barrel and spring were out of warranty, and had it serviced at the same time. Total bill was £242 and pence. My mate's the service manager....
