Rich
I hated the neck strap that came with my D5000, it was too short so bought a black rapid sling strap - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Rapid-RS-7-Camera-Strap/dp/B002WR7VSS It's a very good strong strap with plenty of adjustment but I keep finding myself holding the camera as I walk along, especially if I have my 55-200 lens on. I've been thinking of getting a better neck strap but not sure what to go for, any suggestions? I don't want anything cheap that might snap easily. I've also been thinking of getting a hand strap, has anyone used these, are they comfortable? I also want to change my Lowepro slingshot bag to a small backpack one but struggling to find anything compact enough. I only carry the camera body and a maximum of 2 lenses but all the bags I've seen are a similar size to the slingshot. The smaller bags only seem to be over the shoulder ones, which I don't like. parthiban
Can't really help on the straps but what kind of backpack are you looking for? I think most of the backpacks are generally larger bags, which slingshot do you have as mine only really takes the camera and one lens so it's quite a compact one. Rich
Just a 2 strap backpack, not a sling one but I just want one small enough to take the body (with a lens attached) and an extra lens. I have this one - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003656Q7C
parthiban
Lowepro has a few smaller backpacks like the one below, I don't think you'll find one a lot smaller than your sling but something similar sized. https://www.lowepro.co.uk/brands/lowepro/photo-traveler/photo-traveler-150/pd240/
Rich
They all seem to be a similar size so I think you're right and I probably won't find what I'm after. I need to go into a camera shop and compare them really and go from there. If I can't get a compact one then I think one with the camera stored at the bottom and the top section free for other bits. The bag I have now doesn't really have room for anything else and if we go out for the day I usually put my camera in a small over the shoulder bag. Then I put that in the backpack with everything on top, which makes it a PITA getting it out! I suppose something like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Camera-Bag-DSLR-SLR-Laptop-Backpack-Rucksack-Pack-For-Nikon-Sony-Canon-Olympus-/400948973045
parthiban
I got a Manfrotto NX Sling before I went to Thailand as a cheap and cheerful bag that I could carry other stuff in as well as my camera. It's really just a backpack with a separate small camera holder but it worked really well (and was only £30).
Rich
That sounds good, especially at that price for a Manfrotto but I'm not really getting on with my sling bag, I would prefer 2 proper straps. After some more searching I think this is the one that would be ideal for me - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lowepro-Photo-Hatchback-DSLR-Camera/dp/B008OQUX22 £50 is alot of money for a bag though but you can get it on ebay from China for nearly half that - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lowepro-Photo-Hatchback-22L-AW-DSLR-Camera-Photo-Bag-Backpack-Slate-Grey/221833794669 I would suspect it is the same bag from the same factory. The Lowepro I have now doesn't actually have the logo on it but it is a genuine bag I also got on ebay (from a UK seller), the quality is excellent and on a par with my smaller Lowepro bag, which does have the logo. parthiban
They do an NX backpack as well but the price seems to be a lot higher now - don't remember it being a special offer or anything but I just wandered into Jessops so it may have been. I much prefer slings as you can take the camera out without taking the bag off. That lowepro looks a good bag for what you need - the ebay one might be a copy but as long as it does the job does it really matter?
Rich
The NX one opens from the front and one reason I got the sling was cos it opens from the back, which the Lowepro also does. Plus like you say it's easier to get the camera out with a sling. However, the weight on one shoulder is the reason I want to change to two straps. Yes it's probably a copy or from the same factory, I suspect the latter and no it doesn't bother me if if has a name on it or not, as long as the quality is the same then I'd be happy with it. I don't think I'd have to pay customs on that, possibly abit of VAT?
parthiban
My experience with customs has always been a bit hit and miss, sometimes I've been charged and sometimes not so I think it's a bit of the luck of the draw
Rich
I ordered the bag a while ago when Ebay were doing the 20% off offer, so I got it for £22 delivered from China, less than half the UK price! They sent it on the 7th April and they tried to deliver it on the 14th when we were away. I didn't even pay any extra for shipping so impressed with that and no custom charges. I picked the bag up yesterday and first thoughts are it's made very well and appears to be the real McCoy! The camera section is great, it's removeable and is like a separate bag with handles. The top section is very spacious, which is just what I was after and there's a section for a laptop/tablet too. The straps across the waist and chest might annoy me, the former can be removed but I don't think the latter can, although they can be moved up and down to adjust the height. I just need to think about a strap now, the sling might be difficult to use when wearing this. I tried the Nikon neck strap on again and I just feel like a tourist with it and don't really like having the camera in front of me, especially with a heavier zoom lens. Maybe a longer padded one would make it feel better.
