Portable/Cordless Tyre Inflator

Recommended Posts

I have used 12V compressors for years but now that we have 3 cars and I swap winter/summer tyres over I don't want to put that strain on the car batteries any more.

Has anyone used a portable one before, are they any good and how long do the batteries usually last in them? I was thinking of getting a cheap jump starter with a built-in compressor but some get bad reviews.

I have considered getting a mains one but it'll be a chore getting the extension lead out to use it.

I had one of those that was combined with a 12v jump pack but it was pretty rubbish really , a mains one works well , I have a portable one and fill it up in the garage and it has plenty to add a few psi to the tyres , i rarely have to refill it again midway through . Screwfix often have deals on them and they are cheap enough

If you dont already have a compressor you will find it handy for all kinds of stuff

I had a Bosch cordless pump ( in fact still have it in the garage ) when I had the Smart as it had no spare as standard. Seemed to work fine to add a few pounds to save going down the garage, never did try a pump from zero though.

A lot of the reviews say the same for the cheap ones and I'd imagine the battery will flatten pretty quickly. It would probably be better to buy a new cheap car battery and use that with the 12v compressor, then charge it up afterwards and that should last a few years at least and is cheaper than the jump packs. I've been using the old Accord one in the shed, which did 8 tyres (10 psi each) on a full charge but it's dead now. It was dead when I bought the car so lasted 2 years using it like that.

I like the idea of an air compressor but it seems abit OTT for just inflating tyres, although like you say I'm sure I'll find a lot of other uses for it. It's just having to get it out, using an extension cable, connecting it up - it's just a faff! If I got one though can they be stored in the shed or don't they like damp conditions?

Is that the one that looks like a drill/power tool? I have seen those but yes I don't think the battery will last that long.

I've just been looking at all the attachments you can get, the impact wrench would definitely come in handy! I'll have to think about it and consider whether I'll actually get the use out of it.

I've decided to get a new battery for the Accord so will keep the old one to use with the 12v compressor and save the batteries in the car. It'll be easier than having to plug an air compressor in with the extension lead. Only other way is to start the cars when I use the compressor off their own batteries to stop them draining.

I was speaking with my Dad earlier and he said he's bought 3 of those jump starters now and they're crap. Go flat in a week if not used and don't even jump start the cars when fully charged so that put me off them.
