Suspension collapse?

Got back yesterday to find the Merc looking like this - has the front suspension collapsed? Haven't had a chance to jack it up yet but considering it's been sitting still for 2 weeks and was absolutely fine beforehand, any ideas as to what could have happened?

Isn't it on air suspension?

Ours is actually on springs, not on air. And it's definitely a broken spring as in the pic below. Can this just happen Tony? Bit scary to think I had the car on the motorway the day before we flew out, and if this had happened at motorway speed I'm guessing it may have been a one way ticket to the central reservation.

Can you get a close up of the exposed metal?

Looks like a manufacturing defect (crack) that has enlarged and rusted then finally broken.

It's an 11 year old car though, would the defect have survived that long?

Heavy cars Mercs and its a common problem , not expensive to sort either . Never noticed mine breaking to be honest , just noticed the car sat low , not that that low though

Do you normally replace both sides at the same time or will it be ok to just replace the broken spring? Yep the spring has dropped right down which is why it looks to be basically sitting on the bump stop.

Fair enough, if that's 3 on similar Mercs just on the forum I guess it's a fairly common thing! Still need to get the car booked in to get it sorted - trying to decide whether to send it in to Merc and try and argue for a free replacement or just get it done locally (which I'm guessing will be a lot cheaper if they don't end up paying out)

MB won't do it for free trust me.

It was in for a service a week before this happened - would there have been anything visible if this was about to happen?

They also replaced the brakes - could I argue they damaged it when the wheels were off?

You could argue but you'd lose :)
