What sort of engine is this?.....

The rod (Shaft) is just the drive shaft for the supercharger , there will be a pulley on the end connected to the crankshaft of the engine . Usually the supercharger is further forwards on the engine meaning you dont need such a long shaft

Seems odd they would put a charger on such a basic engine?..... Last night i was thinking about that rod and i wondered if it was where they would put the starter..A bit like F1 when they used to put the starter up it's chuff.

Because "Hot Rod" its a cool engine , How many straight 8's have you ever seen plus is period for the car by the looks of it.
