I really need to look into getting a faster zoom lens but they aren't cheap so will probably have to stick with what I've got. I had alot that went in the bin, which were really out of focus. It's acceptable to have some OOF with motorsport shots but these were too much for my liking. Had a good night there, one car crashed into the barrier badly and loosened a post, which took them an hour to repair. The light had gone by then so only got a couple of shots through the fence as we also moved to get out of the wind! How many men does it take to replace a post! Night shots, not so good though. I set the camera to shutter priority mode so it sets the aperture automatically, the same for the ISO. I used a low shutter speed of around 1/80 but played with the settings to see what gave the best shot, I think some were taken at 1/60 I'll have to check. The problem I have is my lens isn't the fastest so it doesn't always focus when I want it to. I use back button focusing and leave it in continuous mode so as I pan the cars the lens will automatically refocus as I follow it. Sometimes the lens is abit slow at doing this so when I take the shot it's not focused properly and I end up with a blurry mess! It also doesn't help that this is just an oval track with lots of barriers, fencing and light posts in the way so the area I can get a shot from is pretty limited. I have found a partial photo online of the track, I tend to track the cars from about 3 posts away from where I want to take the shot and then I have to get it in between 2 of the posts so I literally get 2 seconds to get it. Sorry I should've been clearer, yes it doesn't focus particularly fast. Obviously a faster lens means more money so I'll have to stick with what I've got for now. parthiban Posted April 22, 2014 Report Share Posted April 22, 2014 I haven't done too much high speed stuff, but I did take some photos at Goodwood a few years ago and didn't notice any particular focus speed issues with my lens (just the kit lens that came with the camera), my issues were more to do with my skills (or lack thereof). Are you using a Nikon lens? But yeah the truly high speed stuff is very expensive and probably not worthwhile unless you're a pro photographer (or just really keen!)
