thecremeegg
Right so I have a problem in that as soon as I get to around 45-50mph my wheel starts to shake quite badly. I assumed it was the front wheels being out of balance and so took it to a tyre place and they've "balanced" them but the problem persists. It gets worse the faster I go and doesn't seem to die off after 70mph like wheel balance issues tend to. I know that there seems to be huge variation in wheel balancing machines but does it sound like the wheels or would it be something else like bushes etc? Any ideas welcome! Thanks
NickT
Are they aftermarket alloys? If they are hub centric they might need a spigot ring fitting. .. This is assuming that the tyres aren't cheap nasty dodgy brands ditch finders
Tony
I agree with Nick..... Also does the frequency/ pulse change with speed or is the vibration the same regardless?
thecremeegg
Hi guys, They are aftermarket but had the wheels on my old MX5 and this one for a while with no spigots. The tyres are all pretty new Rainsport 3s so they should be ok. It gets more intense in terms of vibration the faster I go yes, 70mph can be really shaky. Tony
Critical question, what happened to the car between everything being ok and now. Assuming it was ok before?
thecremeegg
Nothing noticeable, used to be fine, seems to have just got worse. I've ordered some spigots which arrive today and see if they help but otherwise is it something I can come in for you guys to look at on friday? Tony
Spigots are essential if required.... 9 times out of 10 you might get away with the wheel being in the centre when re-fitted, more so if air guns are "NOT USED" but that one time it's off then it opens a whole world of hurt. thecremeegg
Ok noted, we'll see how they work. It's weird as I've had the wheels on my previous MX5 and this one without issue until recently, perhaps I've been lucky!
Tony
Have you or anyone checked the wheels fit on the hub? Any up/ down side-to-side movement before the nuts are done up is a bad thing, not only because of the vibration but also because they can come loose. thecremeegg
I haven't actually, thanks for this help, all appreciated. You guys were great at setting up the geo on the car earlier in the year! I'll hopefully fit the spigots tonight and have a check for play etc.
Tony
If it's due to the rings it will be an immediate fix.
