Rich
This is from the in-laws Fiesta, he was driving the other day (luckily very slowly) when he heard a loud bang. He was a minute from home so got it there and had a look, the spring had snapped. The surface area looks rusty but he also said he hit a pothole the other week so maybe that fractured it? Tony
Typical fatigue where the lower/ top helix snaps.
Rich
New springs are arriving tomorrow. They look easy to change - remove the bottom shock bolt, then either lever the beam down or use compressors to remove the spring and refit new one. Is it really that easy? Tony
Yep it's that easy.... Point to note undo shock bolts before jacking the car up

RobPhoboS
Same thing happened to my sister, in the same car !
Tony
Odd that some cars are known for this... I mean if i made cars and this happens i would be onto the manufacturer asap.
Rich
It's a 2010 Fiesta so only 7 years old with 100k miles on it. My Mondeo had 150k miles on the shocks and springs before I lowered it and they were fine. My Accord has 120k miles and is still on the original suspension, although the front shocks have gone but that is a very heavy car compared to a fiesta. Maybe the springs need to be beefier? Tony
But then the coil rate goes up.... The AA recognize 60k for new suspension since they deteriorate so slowly the driver is unaware there's an issue until something like this happens. Rich
I suppose they are subjected to a harsh life so anything over 60k miles is good going. For what they cost it's not too expensive to replace them, especially if you can do it yourself. I ordered him some Sachs ones for £70 delivered. Rich
Ok so I ordered the rear springs when it's actually the front that snapped - although he never actually said, I assumed! What a c**k-up!
Tony
Oh nuts..... It's rare the front snap and a bit more involved fitting them.
Rich
That's why I assumed it was the rear as they're more common for snapping. Yeah it's a spring compressed, top mount off job - main concern is the pinch bolt, is it threaded in the knuckle? Might be an idea to remove it all complete than deal with a snapped bolt. Tony
Is it the single pinch bolt type?
Rich
No idea I've not looked.
Tony
I think it's a single pinch point... Beware it's Mondeo territory
Rich
He said it was 2 bolts, both with nuts so no problems with undoing them. Changed the springs ok so all sorted now. Just got the hassle of sending the others back!
Tony
Half a job with two pinch bolts
